LONG DAY COMING
The bay might call the day, but in this case it called two. From there it just became a matter of picking the right one / BY SEAN DOHERTY The Eddie could quite easily have gone off the day before it did. The forecast “’69 swell” had showed on the Sunday night – the first taste of it, anyway – and the Monday morning dawned raw and grey with the ocean fairly boiling. The fact the swell had a lot of north in it saved most of the beachfront houses – running along the North Shore more than smack-bang into it – but it also left Eddie organisers with a dilemma…
BREAKING JAWS SURFERS ATTEMPT TO TAME THE BEST PEAHI EVER With four days of “proper Jaws” under its belt (and apparently more on the way) the Hawaiian winter of 09/10 is already one for the record books. Our man on the ground (i.e. in the channel, on the ski and riding the wave), Jamie Mitchell reports back on the best jaws season ever ridden… WHAT’S UP HAOLE? A SERIES OF HAOLE TALES FROM THIS YEAR’S HAWAIIAN SEASON / BY LUKE KENNEDY Hawaii is not necessarily the kind of place that allows you to ease yourself into. On the afternoon of my arrival, on my maiden trip to the North Shore, Sunset is six-to-eight feet Hawaiian... From the balcony we can see lines of trade-groomed north swells swinging into Sunset, perfectly framed by a couple of swaying palm trees. It’s immediately apparent what people mean when they talk about the kind of energy Hawaii has. The waves draw you towards them while simultaneously inspiring great fear. It’s a place where the ocean holds court and other pursuits are rendered feeble and meaningless next to riding waves… HAWAIIAN ODYSSEY THERE’S A LOT MORE TO HAWAII THAN OAHU / BY DAVE SPARKES Somewhere along the way ‘Hawaii’ has come to mean the stretch of sand, reef and surf-company houses between Velzyland and Waimea Bay. Every year around this time surf magazines bring out their Hawaiian coverage and every year pages are filled with photos and tales from Pipe, Backdoor, Sunset and Off The Wall. Sure there’ll be a story on Waikiki if the swell gets really small, or a couple shots of Jaws if it goes the other way. And don’t get us wrong the North Shore of Oahu is amazing and deserves every page it gets. But all we’re saying is that there’s a lot more to Hawaii than a seven-mile stretch of sand. After all they used to be called ‘The Islands’ for a reason… ROCK SHOTS Buzz
