![]() My hospital room spun. A low pressure system churned my guts. Catbird sobbed by my bedside. Crusty Carl trembled with rage and illegal chemicals. Daphne Grrng’s eyes blazed. We all gaped at the holo-TV recording. Darth Staker, believing a disguised Annie was me, had already stabbed my twin through her hands and shot her with a nerve-jangling gun. Staker spoke leisurely. ‘Once upon a time, the resources of an entire planet were devoted to creating the perfect surfer. And killer. Me. Rival surf companies have tried for decades to produce ‘the next Darth Staker’. Genocide especially has made some competent killing machines. But mostly they are robot kooks, ugly surfers who couldn’t win a heat against a surfing keg. The key to my success is my DNA – stolen from the greatest human surfer of all time. It is not a light burden. I have to silence the voice of a long-dead mortal, urging me not to kill, to surf in a freer fashion, to ride the zany wizard’s sleeve...’ Staker jolted. ‘But I am better than ANY mortal! I paddle faster than anything alive. I never tire. I stand through the thickest of lips. I calculate every turn to the billionth decimal point. I need no space-suit on airless planets!’ ‘Nor’s a bloody garbage can!’ muttered Carl. I clicked Pause. ‘Why is this decepticon reject ranting such crap? Isn’t he afraid Annie’ll tell the universe?’ Daphne Grrng growled, ‘He knows Annie will tell no one.’ ‘What do you mean?’ ‘Continue playing!’ Daphne roared. |
