Tracks Presents Bells Big Hits 1987-Grommet Nick Wood Wins
By Col Bernasconi | 05 April 2011

Helping to 'Celebrate 50 years of the Rip Curl Pro and Bells Beach Easter Rally', Tracks magazine has brought to life some classic archived pages from past issues. Going all the way back to 1974 and back up to 2006 Tracks delivers moments of surfing excellence and much more... Each video presentation is accompanied by audio commentary from a Bells legend (or in this case a Tracks hack).

At Bells Beach in 1987 young Novocastrian Nick Wood did the impossible, at just 16 Nick, the natural footer, then referred to the world over as Nicky, defeated a legendary field of stalwarts to claim the most prized possession in surfing - A Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach trophy.

Nick had been touted as the 'next big thing' since he was 11. It was obvious he had the gift. And at Bells in 1987 that gift was on display for all to see, his timeless performance capped off by a giant-lip-line-coping-ride, on a crunching four foot shore break, that he rode for a mile, before free falling backwoods towards the flats - amazingly he nailed it with an effortless ease that defied the exploding plumes of heavy Bells water around him.
Nick's win at just 16, a historic moment yet to be repeated.

Any chance of finding the article written (with Photos) on Kelly Pritchard (Boondi or Boondy) a great surfer and best mate of Mick Pearce and John Jolly - down the east coast.. His son Corey (now 15 years of age) sadly didn't get to know his dad, as Kelly passed away when he was a little fella. Really would appreciate anything, anybody could find. Thanks - his sister, Jo Bartlett
