Interview with Simmo
Whats your main motivation for shaping surf crafts at the moment?
Love the feed backā¦.really keeps you amped when everyone is loving the boards also endless combinations which will effect how the boards will go.
Is there anything you are doing differently now as opposed to 12 months ago?
Really working on different outlines and curves with my teamriders. More concave more curve allowing precise surfing in the pocket.
How have board designs changed in the last five years?
More concave more curve softer rails.
How long have you been shaping?
About 7 years.
Approximately how many boards have you shaped in your lifetime?
3000.
What design innovations are you currently working on at the moment?
Combinations of the perfect amount everything to make the ultimate magic board, every board.
What do you think the current surfboards designs could improve upon?
It's come to a bit of a halt on the elevation process but getting the magic board that's gonna go and do what no other board will, every time that's a challenge.
What advice would you give the average punter when ordering a board for the first time?
All shapers say it, be honest with your stats so we can shape the right board for you, we do this day in and day out so we know what we're talking about.
Who is on your surf team?
Jay Phillips, Josh Slabb, Johnny Phillips, Pip Lanham, Jay Lanham, Scott Lanham.
What is your advice on fins considering the options available today?
I always recommend glass-in fins... basically you just can't beat the feel of them. That is unless you plan on traveling which I'll recommend FCS, probably the best at the moment regarding systems.
Apart from yourself, what other shapers do you think are leading the way at the moment?
You just got to look at who the pro's are ordering boards off at the moment. Almerrick, DHD, JS Tokoro, they are all looking good and seem to be working well.
Anything else you would like to get off your chest?
Yeah, how's about getting a bit of swell every now and then? I'm not asking for perfection, just at least surfable. Is that too much to ask for?
