Interview with Scott Crump

Whats your main motivation for shaping surf crafts at the moment?

I surf everyday. So I am constantly working on new ideas as well as refining proven designs.

Is there anything you are doing differently now as opposed to 12 months ago?

Mainly two things, first I have been heaps of our modtro twins. (Modern retro) they are so fast in crap surf its unreal. Second, sollife is now using the most accurate and progressive design technology on the planet.

How have board designs changed in the last five years?

Performance boards are getting refined to perfection. Also the average surfer is becoming much more open minded to alternative board designs. i.e the modtr twins and singles.

How long have you been shaping?

Over 10 years.

Approximately how many boards have you shaped in your lifetime?

Thousands.

What design innovations are you currently working on at the moment?

The modro twins. So fast and loose, combining old school outlines, with progressive rockers, bottom contours and rails. So FUN!

What do you think the current surfboards designs could improve upon?

I am pretty happy with the direction we are heading. Open mindedness?

What advice would you give the average punter when ordering a board for the first time?

Bring in your old board and verbalize to the shaper the good and bad points in it.

Who is on your surf team? (Give me the dimensions of your best team riders short board)

Che Stang -Usa, Steve Ahrens - curl curl, Lance Pirie- gold coast. And I have been working with Shane powell a lot. Che board- 5'11". 18 1/8". 2 1/15" round tails

What is your advice on fins considering the options available today?

For a high quality fin that does not flex at the base, I use futures fin system. Use a shop test center to find the perfect fin for you.

Apart from yourself, what other shapers do you think are leading the way at the moment?

Greg Webber, Renuad Cardinal, Phil Byrne, Skip Frye and Tim Patterson.
