Interview with Adrian York

Whats your main motivation for shaping surf crafts at the moment?

The burning desire for perfection. There is so much involved in board design, it's freekin' unreal when a new design takes you in another direction. Best feeling.

Is there anything you are doing differently now as opposed to 12 months ago?

Tweaking the hell out of old designs, learning so much.

How have board designs changed in the last five years?

Tighter, faster, sharper and stronger.

How long have you been shaping?

A long, long time.

Approximately how many boards have you shaped in your lifetime?

Well I'm a hand shaper, so I reckon 3000.

What design innovations are you currently working on at the moment?

Well today I made myself a board with heaps of outline curve between feet, with flattish rockers between feet, with a kick before and after feet. Single concave.

What do you think the current surfboards designs could improve upon?

Get the thing out of the water.

What advice would you give the average punter when ordering a board for the first time?

Be cool and respectful. Remember your shaper will learn from you, also he or she will give time freely to get your design right. Shapers are artists.

Who is on your surf team?

Samba Mann, Jock Barnes and heaps of respectful kids. I have no time for grommets who are self-proclaimed hero's.

What is your advice on fins considering the options available today?

Glass-on fins, FCS if you're travelling.

Apart from yourself, what other shapers do you think are leading the way at the moment?

Too many.

Anything else you would like to get off your chest?

Nah.
