oi why are all the rest of the old hands now legends I remain a grommet? I sense a prejudice against polysylables. Sounds like the admin's need a good taunting.... here goes!
Trying to keep it light and breezy, huh? Yeah I know, the menace of intelligent discourse scares the kids away, and they are the ones that generate the most revenue for advertisers, right? I cannot remember once when I have clicked on any sites that flash up as banners etc. I know what it means.... traffic increases the amount you can charge for ad space (or something to that effect) and cynical old bastards like me will not be manipulated. I like the idea of infecting "light and breezy" with "heavy and thought provoking" and I will never succumb to the sparkly ads, all tits and arse with affected "street cred". Tracks is lost amongst the multi-national publishers dross moulded by "the guys in marketing".... I mean, seriously, who has the last word on what ads appear and what ads don't? The editor would be 3rd or 4th down the line, I'd reckon. Wow, you must be dizzy with power, considering that the ad content takes up over half of "your" publication. I don't really visit here anymore because my stance is obviously unwanted... that being, this is a written medium, and I expect to see some good writing. I can't actually expect that from the magazine anymore, so why would it happen on the humble forum?
Ignore this, powers-that-be, if you think I am correct. No response will be veiwed as vindication.

With all that intellect and wide ranging vocabulary you might of offered some solution to the problems you've pointed out... As a business faced with the very real prospect of becoming obsolete due to its internet rival, what in your opinion would you do to change it? Keeping in mind that you do actually need to make a profit... As for the writing, gone are the days where a story about wet dreams gets a run in the mag and well thought out articles are. I think you are missing the point. Surfing magazines are and should always be about surfing and just because you would like to read post grad thesis-esk dross does not mean the rest of us would. In fact I think that something like that would be the quickest turned page in the whole magazine... You could be forgiven for becoming a little too cynical with age but seriously Mr V, you write as though everything is an attack at you personally. Someone with a bit of wisdom and a few years under their belt is a rare commodity on a surfing forum. Pimply grommets however are rife here and your upset because no one will converse and articulate at your level? Sorry about the forum legends title I thought I had got every one and your opinions are most welcome here, but is there a small chance your taking everything a tad too seriously?

"Surfing mags are and should always be about surfing"...Now that is rich. I think it's time for a little reflection here back to the days we like to call the KOBY YEARS. This is when magazines had in my opinion an unhealthy infatuation with Mr Abberton and all things "bra" related.
And please don't draw the bow that Koby is a surfer therefor it is surfing related because we all know that there is hundreds of underground chargers in this country going hard daily and not getting a fraction of the coverage he ever did. No, it was his thug lifestyle you all found so intrigueing, which in my opinion is about as far as way as it can get to what surfing once and should always stand for. Sycophantic interviews, photo shoots wearing hand cuff, brooding..snarls into the camera??? This is surf related?
So as I see it Mr V posts as long winded, pompas and boring as they are have no more strayed from surfing topics as this very mag has (lets not forget the issue with the surfers wives..classic) BUT you just may learn something from him whereas poor ol' Kobes..my heart still bleeds.

is there a small chance your taking everything a tad too seriously? I will back this up by reminding you of a scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail where the French are taunting the English crusaders from the parapet of thier castle... "I will taunt you.... and then... I will taunt you some more.... ahhh ha ha ha... your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elder berries.... ha ha ha"
Yes I am taking this VERY seriously (cough).
Look... I appreciate the economics but I detest the way commercialisation of anything treats the intended target market as a pack of chumps. For example, turn on the telly and observe (objectively) one of those shouty christmas ads..... they may as well just say "you are a f#cking idiot" over and over for 30 seconds and then display the "low, low" price at the end.... no deposit!, interest free! it is just insulting.
I have gotta say that an intelligent approach to a surfing publication that pushes some artistic boundries and plays with peoples heads a little may, in fact, provide impetus for people to buy it. Surfing remains stubbornly unique because it is both incredibly difficult and tremendously rewarding. Attempting surfing requires a robust tolerence of risk and ridicule because you might not actually be able to do it very well, no matter how hard you try. Most people who do attempt it will give up. I see this as a blessing. Multi-national publishers would see it as a curse. "Niche marketing" is a euphamism for a capped market, so targeting lowest common denominators is the fallback position to gather the dumb, straggling wanna-be's to maximise circulation figures. Reflecting on the above paragraph would lead me to the conclusion that I would be a leper in a brainstorming meeting with the marketing folk. Esp if I brought out an AK47 and mowed them down, which would be very tempting, I must admit.
Grommets are not dumb, esp. the chicks.... might pay to have a think about that.

How fucken good is this. The 'ol crew slowly filtering back and into it like yesterday. A few will remember my prior cloak ( Dorsal ) now I go under fstop.
Fuck...new forum, new name. All we need now is that fucken seppo kook CWB to return and all the planets will have aligned and all will be good in my world.
Sorry all but not sure about the mag, it's like some bloody time warp and the history of surfing has been completely erased, fuck we just had Sean trained up an he bolted. Now you've got a fine new brace of photogs who I hope have been told there is more to surfing imagery that bok and fucken kapow.
So Tracks be afraid be very afraid as some of the great lateral and combative minds that gave the prior mag both barrels at times for focussing on the scrot demographic will be tested and kept.honest .
Greeings to Mr V, Austicam, Krash, Olly, Hally and Benj

Hey ockers ... and Krash ;) Good to see the forums back again. I've dumped the reef_surfer moniker and gone with the handle I use on all the other message boards I frequent.
Haven't surfed much in the last 12 months but had my first season of snowboarding winter '09 and it was sick. Going for a season pass this year and I can't wait for winter.
Hi to all the old lurkers :)

im back!!!
benji told me a little while ago that it was back and running but I have been too busy being a lawyer (await mr v's sarcastic comments) to join up again!
whats news?????
mr vandeluer
01-13-2010, 02:41 AM
its not sarcasm... it's a realistic dissertation on the facile nature of online communication (focusing on the style and content of the writing), esp. social networking sites.
If I was being sarcastic I would direct my critique toward the person, not the medium.
If I am attacked, however, I respond in whatever smartarse way I deem to be appropriate, carefully avoiding saying anything too damaging or impolite.
Is this acceptable, m' learned friend?

so your (prior) (sarcastic) comments about my being a lawyer was a realistic dissertation of the facile nature of online communication ...
i would have thought the (sarcastic) comments would be more appropriate towards the contents of one's replies rather than their profession ...

Oh come now, madam, this is a "new" forum and I have only attempted sarcasm once toward you when you were completing your studies by inferring you were in for a riveting career in conveyancing. You were quick to pick up on my mistake, and I seem to remember I was gracious in taking responsibility for my insolence. And to refer to you as "m' learned friend" is a term Rumpole used all the time, so (considering my vastly inferior level of education), that is all I have to go on:)
Good to see you back, Cas.... and I look forward to trashing inanities as your wing man...;)
