tried to upload a signature that my friend made for me but:
"Allow Image BB Code No"
"Can Upload Images for Signature No" :(
Can we please change that or is there a good reason?
Cheers

Yes, I noticed that ... probably for space consideration as people were putting in huge GIF pics and it took pages of scrolling to read each post.

The reason being is because you get the odd canary who will put a very wide picture as there signature which in turn will make every page way to wide to view.

Oh ok right. A friend made this for me:

why not just put a size restriction on?

Also, if you use animated GIF formats (especially in signatures) it chokes the bandwidth, slows down the page re-loads considerably.

Ok so put a size restriction on and no animated ones. Simple.

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. We use (so does everyone else) the vBulletin forum software. We cannot stipulate nor control size or file type. We can simply have photo sigs or we can't and as per Hally's post, it chokes bandwith. Our last forum had over 10 pages per forum with about 20 threads per page and god knows how many posts per thread. Now if everyone of those posts had an image signature you can imagine the size of data that would have to be stored. the whole thing would slow down and people with slower internet connections would have to sit and wait for all those to load on every page.

Oh ok right then.
I just thought maybe you could cause there are some forums like this video game one for example:
http://www.modernwarfare2forum.com/
It has: Threads: 7,142, Posts: 100,786, Members: 5,839
And 90% of those posts have an image signature and the site runs just as fast as thing one.
But ah well, I understand :)

If your using later versions of ADSL and fast broadband, you won't notice anything different. Some older equipment does choke tho'.
But its the scrolling back to find earlier posts that's painful (especially when everyone seems to "quote" a post with lot's of pics!) ... I enjoy the pic's but not everytime someone says "Nice" and "great" for 6 pics per post, that's scrolling 18 pics to read two words!!!
Can't find the comments half the time, but that's another topic lol.

I don't get where your coming from there Hally with the 18 pics for two words
Anyway what version of Vbulletin do you use. Here is the Vbulletin admin panel for signatures on another forum that I am on:

See at the very top you can change image in signature size restriction. You don't have that?

The numbers in the boxes are referrals to HTML embedded codes so admins can enter suggested sizes...
"WE allow <num_1> by <num_2> avatars" so different sites can SUGGEST a size and not have to type out long sentences everytime they want to changes rules or whatever.
HTML will put (say you type 500 in the first box) into <num_1> and so on. It Prints "We allow 500 by ...etc
It does not SET the size, just displays it.

Say someone post 6 Pics down the page, you like them and answer by pressing the "QUOTE" icon it will add the WHOLE message and photos to your reply.
So you click on "QUOTE" and type ...NICE!" then submit.
Result ... under the original 6 pic post, your reply with a copy of the 6 pics again.
Most use the "REPLY" icon but you'd be surprised.

Yea ok. What's that got to do with images in signatures though? If you quote someone there signature isn't in there.

Nothin' - just saying.
Some BB can limit sig pics, some can't. I miss the good ones too.

i wish i would have read this before i started trying to download avatars and signatures ,
sorry ben i,m a tech myself and at 64 kb a photo it ain,t going to bog down the bandwidth thou i agree on the gifs i,ve added a really cool gif to my email of a guy going through the tube at what looks like backdoor pipe and it has slowed dramatically the time it takes to send emails even though the size is small , after trying for awhile to add a photo avatar i clicked that its an admin thing , shame the personal touch is a good thing thou i could imagine the work involved in screening each one before posting , just in case some funny fffer decided to put a porn picture on there or maybe worse ben at the tracks party !!! :)
