Mixing surf and league…

South Coast surf superstar Sally Fitzgibbons has opened up about combining her double life as a surf icon with her relationship with Penrith Panthers star Trent Merrin.

In the new issue of Inside Sport, the 25 year old from Gerroa in NSW gives her take on the changing face of surfing.

"There's been a full generational shift in women's surfing," she tells the latest edition of Inside Sport, on sale in newsagents now.

"We went from the Layne Beachley era to Steph Gilmore to the current period. There's wave pool technology and we've just been given our Olympic spot for 2020.

"We've had a takeover of our organisation which has resulted in the World Surf League… It's a beautiful time to be in a sport that's blossoming and undergoing all this change.

"It's great being in such an elite group of women who are all individually amazing in their own right and have a completely different approach to putting that jersey on."

But she also reveals how she manages to mix her surf, sea and beach lifestyle on the coast with Merrin's rugby league world in the far west of Sydney.

"It's such a great culture for footy out there," she tells the grand finals special issue of Inside Sport. "It's about pushing his limits – it's a challenge for him and his career.

"Trent loves the team out there. Being part of the facility myself at times, being able to train in and among that environment, it's really welcoming.

"It's cool to be on each other's journeys."
