The Nation of Jordy

After a recent video drop, Jordy chats exclusively to Tracks about the lie of the land.

It has been an up and down kind of year for Jordy so far, but the most important element of it, as he touches wood, is the fact that he has remained uninjured. Currently sitting fairly pretty at number 7 on the Jeep Leader Board, Jordy wants to push hard during the back half of the year.

Tracks: Your health looks to be top at the moment. Have you been training hard and eating well at the moment?

JS: Yes. I've been doing a bit of training, and always eating as well as I can. It has been good to be in one place for more than a week, so that I can get into a bit of a routine for a change.

Does Lyndall still make sure you’re eating good stuff and none of that take-away rubbish? Last time I remember her cutting fresh fruit for snacks and making sure that you were getting the nutrients that you needed for top performances.

That’s so funny, but yes. She is always on my case about eating healthy. She packs me secret health snacks for the day so that I never have to look for junk food. She's kinda amazing like that.

It’s obviously time for you to be getting ready for Teahupo’o, aka the world’s most dangerous wave. Been doing any special training of sorts? Have you been doing any running and gym work, or just loads of surfing?

Yes, I have actually being doing quite a bit of both. I've got few gym machines at my place here in The States so it makes it really easy to do a little bit everyday. I actually think that the most important thing at this stage is consistency. You don’t have to hammer it everyday. There will be days when you feel like you can push it hard, and others when you can't, but just doing a little bit everyday is sustainable.

Teahupoo has not historically been Jordy's strongest event. He will be looking to change all that at this year's Billabong Pro, Tahiti. WSL Cestari

Getting to the back end of the year. I know you’re a little frustrated with your results this year, but you still seem to be in a really good headspace at the moment. Do you agree? What’s going on?

Absolutely! I feel great and am in a good place. I just have to keep believing in the process, and it will turn around, but at this point just focus on the good things and the stuff that can add value to my health, my life and my career.

What is your opinion on the state of surfing at the US Open? Good enough? Not progressive enough?

Well, the waves where really tough. It was probably the smallest conditions I've ever competed in. We always knew that the waves where going to be small, but it was really tiny. Overall it’s really a week for your sponsors and for your fans, which is ok. They get to see and meet you first hand, and I think that’s really important.

Jordy can ramp up the progression but did his best surfing of the year at Bells, where he relied on his power attack to claim a second. WSL/Sloane

What is Jordy’s three-year plan? Is there a plan?

Well, in my career – there is that world title that I want really badly, and I think I just have to keep on doing the very best I can, have fun and truly enjoy the process. I think there are going to be some tough times and some really good times ahead, but that’s what paints the pretty picture in the end.

Are there any new moves you’re working on?

No. Not at this point. I’ve been just trying to go back to the basics lately, and double-checking that those are still perfect. It can’t just be good; it’s got to be absolutely perfect.

You are known for a great surfing imagination, but are there still big new moves to come in our surfing universe? Are we not tapping out of innovation yet?

No, absolutely not. There is obviously way more to come.  If you think about the amount of reps you can get on Kelly’s wave pool for example. It’s definitely going to speed up the process a lot I believe. There’s a lot more to come.
