Titans of Mavericks Called On

The big-wave madness continues with Mavericks set to blow on Friday.

Has there ever been a break enshrined in as much voodoo as Mavericks? It’s cold, spooky, patrolled by over sized sharks, beset by infighting, meth use and to top it off, responsible for the deaths of Mark Foo and Sion Milosky.

Too think Jeff Clarke whittled away the better part of five years surfing the joint solo? Says as much about the spot as it does for the steely eyed chippie with the thousand yard stare.

But goddamn it if that joint don’t sparkle like a diamond when it’s on like it was last week and in news just in…will be again on Friday.

After being called off due to the Super Bowl blackout The Titans of Mavericks is back on, which is good news for us but man, imagine you were Mark Healey or Jamie Mitchell or the two dozen other big wave superstars right now…pinging and ponging from Jaws to Mavs to Waimea and back again.

Expect busted boards, broken bodies and good lord if the forecast is to be believed…no end in sight just yet.

“Living out of a bag for the better part of the season is definitely starting to wear on me,” Healey told Tracks before news The Titans was back on.

“Physically, there’s definitely been some damage, but nothing I can’t get past. I wanted to be sure that I made it through the winter and didn’t hurt myself by being too aggressive, but now it’s time to start letting it all hang out.”

Similarly, Mitchell found himself reaching for the well-worn plastic earlier today upon hearing the news.

“I’m on the red-eye straight after the Eddie to make my first heat at Mavs,” Mitchell said.

“I can tell you one thing…my credit card is right about maxed out now.”
