Marti Paradisis, Rewarded, Shipsterns

Marti Paradisis rides the bull at Shipsterns and reaps the rewards.

Shipsterns, what a mongrel of a wave. Pulled back though it looks deceptively beautiful. But look closer and take in the ledge, the bay and the amount of heavy water unloading and it’s a formidable slab. According to film maker & photographer Simon Treweek ,who shot this image, this day was as perfect as it gets and  Shippies regular Marti Paradisis was on fire. Here’s what Simon had to say of the session.

“The weather pattern leading up to this day looked like a borderline swell with the calmest winds. I wasn’t sold on Shippies so I made other plans. The day before I re-checked the charts. The predicted swell had jumped and the winds turned good offshore. I quickly un-made my plans and decided to head in the day before and camp out. I woke early and took my breakfast and camera around the front of the rocks and found a nice spot to watch the action. It turned out to be one of the cleanest groomed swells I have ever witnessed at Shippies. Absolutely perfect and only the locals out. Marti was one of the few who decided to paddle all day. His commitment was rewarded with several of the days best waves. I decided to shoot a more pulled back angle than I ever have before, to try and tell a story more than just a surfer riding a wave. One of the things in this shot you may notice is that the boat with the other photographers is out the back turning around. It’s a shame, as I bet this ride would have looked incredible from water. I guess only the tow team watching on from the shoulder will ever know.”
