2011 Boost Mobile SurfSho

Taj Burrow, Jordy Smith, Owen Wright and Julian Wilson ready to bust out their best moves.

Join world-class surfers Taj Burrow, Jordy Smith, Owen Wright, Julian Wilson and Oscar Wright as they bust out their best moves at the Boost Mobile SurfSho presented by BlackBerry at Bondi Beach from 11th to 13th March 2011.

Last year’s Boost Mobile SurfSho was the first international surfing event to take place on Bondi Beach in over 20 years. Thousands of spectators are expected to return in 2011 to watch Owen Wright defend his coveted back to back titles along with a host of exciting aerial surfers from across the globe competing on the world’s most iconic beach in this free, fun-filled, three-day surfing event.

The Boost Mobile SurfSho will also feature a free entertainment program alongside the spectacular surfing action including a celebrity surfing competition, athlete signing sessions, afternoon beach concerts and loads of other beach activities for spectators of all ages.

Last years Boost Mobile SurfSho champion Owen Wright said, “Last years SurfSho was a lot of fun and it was great to beat world number one – Kelly Slater. I like Bondi a lot, and if we are lucky to have awesome waves again, there is going to be some stiff competition!”

The Boost Mobile SurfSho is also the first-ever surfing event at Bondi to be sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals and is expected to attract more than 40,000 spectators including 13,500 from inter-state and overseas.

Event spokesperson and former pro-surfer John Shimooka said the Boost Mobile SurfSho was a great success in 2010 and will be a unique, fun-filled event that appeals to people of all ages.

“Bondi is one of the worlds most iconic beaches, coupled with famous big-air specialists like Taj Burrow, Jordy Smith and Owen Wright showing off their best tricks, and free music and entertainment all weekend, we anticipate a standing room only event for the second year running!” said Shimooka.

The Boost Mobile SurfSho will run from 8am to 5pm each day, kicking off with the Junior Surf Sho on Friday 11 March. Saturday will see the world’s best compete in the SurfSho Open and main SurfSho events, a celebrity surfing competition to raise money for charity and a jet ski tow-in expression session.

Sunday’s SurfSho competition follows a unique format, designed to make it easy to follow from the beach, even for non-surfers. A wheel is spun at the start of each heat, determining which tricks the surfers must perform. B, O, O, S, T letters are awarded to each successful manoeuvre and the six highest scored surfers who spell BOOST go into the final.

The surfing action will be broadcast on giant plasma screens so everyone on the beach can follow the action close up, and will also be streamed live on the web www.BoostSurfSho.com.au for those that can’t get to Bondi to see it first-hand.

Shimooka said, “The Boost Mobile SurfSho is designed to be a competition that everyone on the beach can enjoy, regardless of their surfing knowledge. We chose the wheel format so that spectators know what the surfers are supposed to be doing out there and can judge along with the panel whether they’ve achieved the trick.”

The Boost Mobile SurfSho is a one of a kind surfing event for people of all ages. Go to www.BoostSurfSho.com.au for more information and a full schedule of events.
