Mexican authorities have confirmed the burnt out van found in the rural state of Sinaloa was that of West Australian surfers, Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman.
The pair was last seen leaving a ferry before making their way towards what Mexican media is reporting as a region governed by gangs and drug cartels.
Relatives raised the alarm after they failed to reach a planned destination by November 21.
Local media is reporting the two were also seen in a convenience store buying maps and may have simply pulled over to the side of the road to spend the night camping.
The two bodies found in the van are reported to be beyond recognition. The ABC is reporting relatives of the two are on their way to help identify the bodies using DNA and dental records.
A GoFundMe campaign set up to assist the families with travel and the investigation has raised over $40,000.
