Pure Mac attack and the ballad of Greenbush city limits… |

Following our hit and miss at Greenbush yesterday it was time to focus our attentions on the curly whirly left we all know and love called Macaronies. It’s the kind of wave that manages to suit both regular and goofy foot stance surfers equally – in fact I’d argue the natural footers ride even deeper and longer in the barrel – a rarity for most left hand breaking waves. Being from Byron Bay was the main criteria for the selection of surfers on this journey, so it’s pure chance there’s not a goofy among them. Wanting to be a natural footer in Byron Bay makes sense though with its long right hand points (I guess it could be like Ry Craike’s father encouraging him a to switch stance s a youngster to benefit from the lefts in Kalbari) although I’m pretty sure none of the Bay Boys were born goofy.
Expecting a short boat ride Danny Wills and Garret Parkes hit the wharf only to find the big boat had already left – it had slab charging Kieren Perrow and young Soli Bailey on it. Miffed by missing Greenbush by a bee’s dick the day before a slightly frustrated KP rolled the dice once more. The 35 minute boat ride puts some people off – but not KP. The swell had hung around from yesterday and they’d cracked the dawn patrol again to catch the high tide. While they may have literally missed the boat, Danny and Garret, put aside any misgiving and began slipping into perfect four footers at Macca’s in mere minutes. Not many waves can set a travelling pro off as much as this joint, as Taj Burow once said to me, “You’ll get a two foot wave here (at Macca’s), and it will be the best wave of your life!” He’s not wrong. A four footer is even better!
When all was said and done smiles were on dials, especially on the freshly returned KP. He and Soli scored some absolute bell ringers at Greenbush – the photos are amazing of the translucent water perfectly mutating with the two of them stuffed inside. The whole crew hit cca’s again for the late and Soli for one capped of a magic day with some beauties. Kid can surf.
Being young and small has its advantages at four foot Macca’s, especially if you’re a savy little tube rider like Soli Bailey Pic: Smithy
