Carissa Moore Honoured With Her Own Day

The effervescent three-time world champion is honoured by the mayor of Honolulu with her own day.

Honolulu’s mayor, Kirk Caldwell, has declared January 4th Carissa Moore Day. At a ceremony at Ala Moana beach park the recently crowned world champion (her third world title) was honoured in front of family and friends.

“At the age of 23, Carissa is already a seasoned professional who garners the respect of fellow surfers, but perhaps even more importantly, she exudes the same Aloha spirit embodied by Duke Kahanamoku,” said Mayor Caldwell. “Whether it’s sending a positive message to young surfers about hard work, dedication, and staying true to oneself, or sharing her love for the ocean and Mother Nature, Carissa expresses a joy for life and adventure that serves as an example to us all.”

The bubbly, humble Hawaiian took said she was completely blown away by the news.

“Mayor Caldwell, thank you so much for this incredible honor. There are not words adequate enough to express my gratitude to the state of Hawaii, my family and friends, sponsors and everyone who has loved and supported me along the way. I never dreamt that I would ever be where I am today let alone ever have my own day. Presidents, people who have changed the world, they deserve to be celebrated. Me? I’m just a girl who is blessed to do something she loves every single day.

“The most important thing I have learned on my journey is that success is not defined by a single moment. The moments on the podium or at the top are few and far between. Those rare moments will pass and other people will take your place. What lasts forever are the moments you share with people; the kindness shown, laughter had, and smiles given. Sometimes we focus so much on the end result that we forget to enjoy every step along the way. Take the time to do what you love with the people you love. In the end, win or lose, that’s what makes the journey worthwhile.

“Today I want you to spend time doing what you love. Do something that makes your heart and soul happy and share it with someone special. Make a moment that will last forever.”

“Never stop chasing your dreams. Anything is possible. Thank you again to all the people who have believed in me and helped make my dreams come true. I hope I can continue to make Hawaii proud and share the Aloha wherever I go. Mahalo.”
