CJ Hobood Tours A Virtual Reality Tube At Teahupo’o

WSL embarks on taking surfing into the future.

The WSL recently teamed up with Samsung and Taylor Steele to dabble in the world or virtual reality. The partnership with the filmmaker and tech giant appears to be a launching pad for the direction the WSL is headed when it comes to delivering content to fans.

Watch this clip below of CJ Hobgood touring a 360 degree view of what it’s like to get pitted at Chopes which dropped in along with an announcement from WSL CEO Paul Speaker earlier today. (Toggle the arrows in the top left corner for the full perspective).

Speaking at the NeuLion Sports Media & Technology Conference, Speaker discussed how “Over-The-Top” entertainment is changing the sports media distribution model and why surfing is perfectly positioned to clean up. For non-geeks, OTT entertainment is a way to broadcast content over the Internet by a third party, instead of using an ISP – similar to Netflix.

“Through our collaboration with Samsung Electronics, the WSL is able to introduce more fans to the wonders of surfing. Using our content and the incredible virtual reality technology with the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition, it’s now possible to feel like you’re actually surfing one of the biggest waves on the planet with a world-class athlete.”

“We want to provide the millions of current and soon-to-be surf fans around the world with the most compelling video possible, and Samsung – a global leader in innovation – understands this.  We are so fortunate to have them as our worldwide title partner,” said Speaker.

“Through our partnership with the WSL, we are able to establish deep-level connections to our fans and create once-in-a-lifetime experiences through our innovative technology and captivating WSL content.”

This announcement and clip appears to solidify WSL’s partnership with Samsung as the league’s overarching sponsor for years to come. It also comes at a time where surfing and technology go hand in hand. Drones, GoPros, GPS watches and live webcasts are now part of the norm. However to reap the full benefits of VR you’ll need to pick up a Samsung VR headset and Galaxy Note4 mobile phone. For some that means surfing with your favourite surfers is still a pipe dream far, far away.
