Classic Fiji Moments: Gabby Wins

Walk through the archives and hear the stories behind the shot by Peter 'Joli' Wilson.

A primal scream as Gabriel Medina claims his second WCT victory of the year. We now know this was a key piece in the puzzle that culminated in the first Brazilian World Title. There was still a lot of work to do for Gabby, but after earlier winning the Quik Pro on a sand bottom point break, Gabby had now won on of the world’s best barreling reef breaks – Cloudbreak. There’s always talk of Gabriel carrying the weight of a nation on his shoulders, but in sealing this win he was also carrying the weight of the Namotu Island staff on his back. Gabriel is a favorite amongst the Namotu staff after staying there for a number of years for Rip Curl photo shoots and for the revitalised Fiji Pro. The last time a surfer staying on Namotu had won was Luke Egan way back in 2000, so you can imagine the celebrations when Gabby won in 2014.
