Classic Fiji Moments: Taj’s Birthday Celebrations

Walk through the archives and hear the stories behind the shot by Peter 'Joli' Wilson.

The Namuto Island Skulldrag is infamous. Made up of seven shots and fruit punch. It varies greatly in strength and type of alcohol depending on who is pouring. The Skulldrag serves as an initiation for ‘newbies’ on the Island, anyone celebrating a birthday or just a way to get the party started very quickly. Taj Burrow has been the lucky ‘birthday boy’ during a number of contests, and here he is taking his medicine. If you look closely at the apparatus that Glen Hall is using to administer the Skulldrag, you’ll see a piece of Taj’s birthday cake being used as a filter. This was one that Taj didn’t finish as it was nearly impossible to skull seven shots mixed with cake in one breath.
