Robbed

A little under a year ago Adam Robertson had proven himself at the highest level by making the final of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells. On the Gold Coast he was just a spectator in the crowd. At Bells Adam had surfed all the way through from the trials in front of a home crowd. Despite his success in a world tour event Adam didn’t qualify for the world tour and his runner up finish didn’t contribute to his WQS status in any way. Under the new single ranking system, which is currently being phased in, there will be no such miscarriages of justice. If a wildcard or a trials winner does well in a world tour event they’ll be banking big points and will be well on the way to a world tour debut.

Searching for The Currens

Tom Curren has been ghosting around the event perpetuating his mythical status. The only difference is that now he’s got the whole family involved in the espionage. He had his sons Pat [ Pat loves meat pies] and Nathan with him and was also particularly interested in the progress being made by his daughter Leanne in the women’s event. We tried to organise a portrait of the family. First attempt only Tom showed up for this shot. Second time round Leanne said we couldn’t do it because one brother was missing. She told us to come back at one. There were no Currens to be seen at one.

I last sighted Tom bending through a cutback so technically perfect it would give bio-mechanists wet-dreams. We’re still searching for the Currens and will keep you posted.

Tommy Peterson is one of the real stars of the VIP balcony at the Rainbow bay hotel. Unlike his reclusive brother, Michael Peterson, Tommy loves to chew the fat and vocally express his opinion. He even let slip that he’s got a stash of boards that bare Michael’s name somewhere in a barn in Merimbula. “Michael and I figure they are worth about $40 000,” he boasted. Tommy has his other income sources though. His Tom Curren fish is sold in Rip curl stores and he collects a nice little royalty every time one walks out the door.

On top of that he shapes about 50 custom orders a year for the right clientele. The only problem Tommy has is that no one wants to give him back any of the boards he shaped in his hey-day. They all know what a Tommy Peterson board is worth.

Tommy’s not too worried though. The free Coronas are flowing in the VIP tent and he’s kind of born under a lucky star. He takes utmost pleasure in letting you know he and Kelly share the same birthday

This girl was such a devout Parko fan she had shirts made up for both herself and her baby bearing the image and name of the perpetually stylish one. When Parko emerged from his heat after a brutally dominant display in his heat against Dusty Paine, he found a young child bearing his name thrust upon him. Parko handled the situation superbly, making it all look as easy as one of his buttery bottom turns. Parko for PM.

For four bucks a hit you’d probably want something with a little more kick than your average cup of java. Still it was a deft display of marketing opportunism. The only thing missing was the tagline. “ Drink Quiksilver coffee and surf like Kelly.”
