Pipe turns on when the hooters turn off.
Throughout the morning’s competition Pipe had been like a wounded bull – unpredictable, dangerous and likely to gore you if got a chance. Shoulders were buckled, egos were bruised and there were enough snapped boards to keep a ding fixer in business for weeks. With snowballing sidewinders sweeping the lineup the contest was officially called off at two PM.
Locals and non-competitors couldn’t believe their luck when the swell cleaned up in the afternoon and Pipe produced a couple of classic free-surfing moments right under the nose of the contest. The usual suspects and a handful of WCT surfers were on hand to take advantage of a lazy Saturday afternoon session.
