“We are Julian (25) and Joaquin (23) Azulay, two Argentinean brothers who left Los Angeles, California last 8th of July 2010 on a truck. No main plan, but a clear idea: surf the entire Pacific Coast. We wanted to go back home to Argentina, but the final destination was not the goal. Exploring and surfing the American continent was what motivated us to drive back instead of flying.
We left United States early morning to cross to Mexico through Tijuana. We spent more than a month in Baja California, surfing and camping on the beaches and cliffs. Scored some long perfect right-handers with no crowd at all. Our last session in USA had been in Malibu, with a solid south swell running, but it was really packed. In Baja we got the same quality of waves, even longer ones–with no one out, just the two of us. It was crazy! Fishermen gave us lobsters and fish as if they had fallen from the sky. The ocean in Baja is full of species and people are extremely generous. We cooked by the fire every night under the clearest skies full of stars. It was perfect.
In mainland Mexico we kept camping and people continued helping us on our way down. Some gave us food and others a place to stay. Really humble people shared everything with us, we never expected to receive so much, but people treated us great and were very friendly. In a small town in the south part of the country, we stayed a week in this native’s house, which was like an hour walk from a perfect wave. We surfed all day and shared unforgettable moments with this family. We ate as a family every night with candles, as they did not have electric power yet. They taught us how to make tortillas, tacos and frijoles con arroz (rice and beans).
It was hard to leave the country because of the people and the waves. However, after three months, Guatemala was waiting.
This way, we took 9 months to get to Peru, where we are now. The trip through Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Galapagos was awesome. When we started this journey, some brands gave us clothes and wetsuits, but we worked to keep going south as we left California with a very low budget. During these months we sold clothes and hammocks at the beach; worked as a taxi for some tourists that wanted to get to different surf spots and needed a 4×4; worked on construction in the desert digging holes, also in Galapagos painting walls; cleaned the bottom of boats with oxygen tanks; and mainly, sold pictures and videos to surfers. We never stopped surfing, as we worked when the swell was off. And when the waves were good, as we are filming everyday, we took footage of the others and sold it.
Now we have three more months ahead before getting to Argentina. The central and south part of Peru and the whole of Chile are waiting for us to explore and surf. At the end of the trip our plan is to make a video and a book with all the material we have been gathering during all this year.”
