Tracks photographer continues his quest for the best shots from in and around the Goldy in lead up to Quikky Pro. |
Monday 22nd February.
The smiling dial of Luke Dorrington.
The swell is elsewhere today and so are the pros. with D’bah washing in at a piss weak one foot this morning; I opted to take the early swim session and was fortunate enough to cop a phone call from local ripper Luke Dorrington who was keen to go for a quick paddle before the crowd got hectic. Luke has been off the scene of late with a job doing mining in Western Australia, a pretty crazy career change for somebody who was (and still is) one of the hardest ripping surfers going around. Since he’s been back from the mine’s he’s taken up the art of shaping boards which is something that runs in the family.
The frontside snap of Luke Dorrington.
His old man Gary is one of the more renowned board shapers from up here on the Gold Coast and one glance at Luke’s crafts (and his surfing) and you can tell the talent has been passed on. It was only this morning that Mick Fanning was talking with young Dozza, asking him when his board will be ready because he’s amped to try one out. It’s quite clear that Luke’s shaping is turning a few heads and is bound for bigger things.

Up and coming ripper Blake Wilson was also out making the most of the early morning clean and relatively un-crowded conditions. Soon after the morning session was finished the on-shore wind came up and blew any chance of further opportunities throughout the day. Maybe tomorrow.
