Gone But Never Forgotten

Kalbarri turns it on to farewell Mason Carter and Chad Fairley.

Sadly, the tight knit surfing community of Kalbarri recently gathered to farewell Mason Carter and Chad Fairley in fitting style at their beloved local.

Mason and Chad were part of the three-man crew of prawn trawler, The Returner, which sank late last month off the Pilbara coast.

A massive, and partly community funded, air and sea search eventually located the vessel. The bodies of Mason, and fellow crewmember, Chad Fairley have yet to be found.

It was also a chance to share stories and sink a few “Red Leads” in tribute to the boys.

“Mason was one of the funniest people you’d ever meet,” says photographer and fellow Kalbarri local, Mike Riley.

“He was always the first to give out a roasting on any of his mates, brothers or family members, no one was ever safe but that’s why we loved him. Wherever they are, I know they are cracking an Export and smiling down on all of us.”
