J-Bay Open: It’s Raining 10s!

Has the judging scale been redefined at J-Bay?

It has been a big couple of days at J-Bay. Entertaining to say the least. However, without question there have been more perfect 10s handed out than possibly any other event in the history of the sport. So, have the surfers moved the needle north and simply performing out of their skin? Or are the judges just feeling it more than ever and not holding back?

Let’s analyse the perfect 10s that have gone down thus far:

Jordy’s Smith’s opening ride Round 3, Heat 7

Jordy backs it up for a perfect 20/20, Round 3, Heat 7

Julian Wilson lacerates J-Bay and falls into a drainpipe, Round 3, Heat 9

John John Florence gaffs a lip, jives and slides into a pit, Round 4, Heat 2

Filipe Toledo’s double alley-opp, Round 4, Heat 3

Frederico Morais, Quarterfinal, Heat 2 (scroll to 8:50 minute mark)

Now apart from Morais’ dubious perfect 10 which iced the reigning world champ’s dream run I’d say all were warranted.

But I wonder how much the judges are influenced by the showmanship claiming being stamped with an exclamation point at the end of every wave?

Granted watching a replay will never compare to seeing the real thing go down in real time. But, tell us what you think?

Have the judges gone gaga at J-Bay or are we witnessing some of the greatest performances ever seen from the world’s best?
