Tracks spoke briefly to John John Florence in the water at Cloudbreak yesterday. The talented Hawaiian, who has been heavily touted as a future world champion, looked happy to be in the lineup, despite the fact it was sectiony and two foot.
Between waves the conversation turned quickly to the ankle injury that forced him out of the first three events of the year. “ It feels super good now … I’m confident to do airs and the land in the flats,” insisted John John, who was still wearing a brace. He suggested the brace helped provide some physical support but was more of a psychological tool than anything. “I surfed without it yesterday and felt kind of naked, so I got my Mum to bring it over with her.” One lightning fast, carving backside 360 indicated he had lost none of his form while recovering.
John John enjoys a spot of SUP’ing before getting back to business at the Volcom Fiji Pro.
A day earlier John John was out on the SUP with his Mum while most of the top 34 lazed around the pool and enjoyed afternoon beers. John John’s presence in the Volcom Pro Fiji definitely adds another dimension of excitement for fans and probably a little anxiety for the other surfers. Conditions are looking good for Thursday.
Mick Fanning made a prediction that, based on the swell direction, they would likely be surfing Restaurants. Tracks will be there – cocktail in hand – to cover all the action.
