A solid roll-call of humans were on hand last night for the highly anticipated premier of Julian’s movie, Scratching the surface. The venue, Sun Studios, is situated in the textile industry rich suburb of Alexandria in Sydney. Despite being miles from any beach there was a summery like atmosphere aided and abetted by plenty of free booze for the first feature-length HD surf film.
The wider audience Julian attracts to surfing were all present and accounted for including surfing icons, industry faithful and beautiful women. And they weren’t to be disappointed. The surfing in this film is from another planet. Directed by Matt Beauchesne, “Scratching the Surface” documents the adventures of Julian, along with friends Dane Reynolds, Taj Burrow, Mick Fanning as they spend a year hitting some of the world’s most beautiful surf spots including South Africa, Australia, Indonesia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, California, Hawaii, France, Spain and Brazil.
The older footage of a young Julian in the film riding a half pipe on his skateboard showcased what a profound knack he has for all board sports. All blonde haired and cute pulling crazy airs and grinning like a Cheshire cat. The airs he was pulling on a surfboard at age 10 another step up again.
The high def footage of the guys at places like the Mentawai’s the real standout. It’s not that easy to let loose when there’s a shallow reef a few feet away – but these guys manage to get galactic… astounding shit.
Julian’s aerial surfing is definitely the star of the film, but his all round affinity with art is a close second. And that’s what it’s going to take to be a future world champion. Something he will no doubt be if his surfing in ‘Scratching The Surface’ is anything to go by.
