"I have a very progressive-minimalist approach to surfing - I tend to avoid barrels or doing turns." - Mark from Borneo.

So how did Borneo come about? Tell us about the members in the band..

Borneo has been taking shape since around 2012. When I moved to Sydney I lived with my grandmother for a few years in Mosman and one night I snuck out to the local pub ‘The Duck’  where I met Felipe a no a heap of the local crew.

Felipe recruited our youngest member John Poseidon to play drums and i remembered a young lad named Nick from my home town of Byron Bay was living in the big smoke.

Before too long we were in a room together making demos lined up a slot to play at Peats Ridge Festival.

In 2015 we picked up local Sydney producer Wally Dibley who makes animal noises on the Synthesizers and Scrout joined us on guitar after missing out on a spot in the NBA draft.

I hear you have an interesting manager…

Tubby John has been managing us since the start. Most days you’ll find him at his desk eating Blueberry Muffins and watching Nick Cave interviews on Youtube. Tubs is a big part of the Borneo team and although I reckon he’s tone deaf, he’s been influential in helping us to find our sound and kept us pushing to find our place as a band.

Our editor described you as “the funnest band in Australia”.. Is fun the mantra for the borneans?

Cheers Lukey… We might have to get him on board our PR team.

We definitely like to entertain. I’m normally having the most fun when people in the audience looked confused. One of my favourite memories was playing a show in Albury NSW. We started singing falsetto harmonies well beyond our range which prompted 3 guys to stand up and leave with their beers…

Check out Sydney band Big White. They’re super fun.

“Concrete Jungle” is a very interesting tune, what inspired it?

I grew up in Sydney with a single mum who was working hard for the man. Her life was tangled in the web of work mm

Concrete separates us from nature which is where we all belong..

The song is a call to arms led by an 8 year old kid…. He is urging people to find the beauty and the rythm in the concrete.

Is it weird that I’m in the band interviewing you about the band that your in?

Borneo is desperate for publicity. This is a good move by you. I’ll cook you dinner tonight – Sausages and Wheat-bix again?

Are you the best surfer in the band?

I suppose that all depends on how you define the idea of “Best.”

My style has been compared to the red Telly Tubby – ‘PO.’

I have a very progressive-minimalist approach to surfing – I tend to avoid barrels or doing turns. I like to explore riding waves like a sloth would – very slowly. I’ve never seen the appeal of chasing barrels like everyone else seems to be doing.
