Saturday November 13, 2010 (Sydney, NSW) – NORAH HEAD Women In Waves surf club have upstaged event favourites North Narrabeen to win the Jim Beam Women’s Surf Tag event at Dee Why on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

In wind affected 1m waves, the NSW Central Coast five-some of Melissa Sherringham, Kimberley Hassel, Sandra English, Kristen Nelson and Donna Schumacher out surfed eight other clubs to take the win.

Despite leading much of the final, defending champions North Narrabeen could not halt the form of Women In Waves team member Melissa Sherringham who notched up a 30.73 out of 40.00 to rocket her team into first position.

“We were getting flogged by Narrabeen in the final and I just went out there to have a little bit of fun,” said Sherringham.  “I got three great waves really quickly and that set us up for the win.”

“There has been a little rip bank like this at home all week, so I felt pretty comfortable out there, despite it not being that good,” she said.

“We made the semi here last year and driving down we thought we should try and make it to the final,” she said.  “To get a win at this event is unreal, it has been a great day at the beach, all the girls had a lot of fun.”

It was the slimmest of winning margins for the Women In Waves team who’s final total of 65.77 was just superior of North Narrabeen on 62.24.  The Manly women’s team came third on 48.64 while the Victorian team of Torquay finished fourth on 42.37.

The Women In Wave’s team were awarded $1000 cash for their victory.

The Sanyo Power Wave award, which offers a new digital video camera to the day’s top scoring power wave (the surfers second ride in each heat) was won by Manly’s Bonnie Hall for an 8.83 score.

The Women’s Surf Tag at Dee Why was event three of the Jim Beam National Surftag Series, which will now head to Newcastle on December 11 for the first of five regional men’s club qualifiers.

The series will then touch down in Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and Cronulla over the summer months before the national decider at Avalon beach in February 2011.

In all, over $130,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to grass roots surfing during the series.

The 2011 Jim Beam Surftag is proudly supported by FCS, Sanyo and O’Neill.  Media partners for the series are Swellnet and Tracks surfing magazine with all event information at www.globalsurftag.com
