Wave Park Group announces location of URBNSURF Perth
URBNSURF is the brand under which a number of proposed wave pools utilising Wavegarden technology will be built throughout Australia. Already announced are plans for pools at Sydney Olympic Park and Melbourne Airport.
Now URBNSURF has just announced the location for the latest pool – in Perth on the Swan River at Tompkins Park, Alfred Cove.
The URBNSURF site says of the announcement:
“Wave Park Group is excited to announce URBNSURF Perth, a next generation surf park facility proposal for Tompkins Park, Alfred Cove.
Perth has an incredibly strong surf culture, with surf sports being actively enjoyed by more than 100,000 residents now spanning four generations. It has a higher participation rate in WA than cricket (both indoor and outdoor combined) and is second only to AFL.
Whilst Perth has kilometres of idyllic beaches, they offer limited quality surfing opportunities. URBNSURF provides an authentic alternative to ocean based surfing for those wanting to surf more easily, to learn more safely and to simply surf more often.
Located only 9 kilometres south of the Perth CBD, and adjacent to the Swan River, Tompkins Park is the ideal location for URBNSURF Perth
The surfing lagoon will feature Wavegarden® technology which will deliver waves catering to a broad range of surfing abilities – from complete beginners, right through to elite athletes with their high performance training needs.
Waves will range from up to 1.7m high, pitching waves, designed for the highest levels of performance surfing, down to 0.6m high, rolling white-water waves, which are perfect for beginner surfers.”
The company are currently awaiting the green light on a lease agreement. If that is approved it is expected that a development proposal will be submitted in the first quarter of 2017. If all goes to plan the first waves will be ridden in late 2018.
We shall see …
