So, like, guys, in massive news you may have heard that Nathan Florence, big wave charger and the younger bro of John, has become engaged to long time partner Mahina Nohealani. Garcia, apart from being a successful fitness model with over 100k followers, is also the daughter of Kai “Borg” Garcia. It had us thinking we should perhaps update our good old Tracks Surfing Power Couples list. It’s been a while, at least 10 months, and luckily, couples both break up, and hook up. Surfing’s hottest power couples are young, free, good looking, talented, clickbaitable and traveling the world. What’s not to love?
Jack Robinson and Julia Muniz
“My girlfriend Julia Muniz has been such a positive influence,” Jack Robinson told Tracks last year. “She’s a great motivator.” Muniz, a surfer, model and influencer best known for her swimwear and lifestyle work, has been crucial to Robbo cracking the big time and was first on the scene when Robbo made the CT last year at Sunset. The pair travel the world, using their massive social following to get free hotels and live their best lives. Annoying, isn’t it.
Leonardo Fioravanti and Sophie Wilson
The Italian Stallion and part-time Gucci model had an up-and-down 2019. A shoulder injury curtailed the back half of the year and he now faces a Injury Wildcard surf off with Mikey Wright on the Australian leg. On the flipside he hooked up with Hawaiian model, artist and natural footer Sophie Wilson and declared his undying love on Instagram. Leo, understandably, spent the winter in Hawaii and the pair have hit the opening QS leg together in 2020. Young love, eh. It always lasts, doesn’t it?
Joan Duru and Maud le Car
The French pair might have the claim to have surfed the most number of QS heats as a couple, a record which is sadly not recognised at the WSL awards. The two have been together for the better part of a decade and with Joan, unfortunately, dropping off the CT are about to be spending a whole lot more time together. That’s a good thing, right?
Alessa Quizon and Caio Ibelli
Hawaiian goofy footer Alessa Quizon and Caio Ibelli have been together for eons. While Quizon’s CT career has gone off the boil since she fell of tour 2016 Ibelli has maintained his CT status, well sorta, despite a number of injury set backs. His wife, and successful model, though has always been a great support often weighing in the series of controversies, usually involving Gabriel Medina.  “It’s a shame that you got people from where you’re from shaming on you,” she wrote after Portugal. “Where I’m from we support our people no matter the cause. Everyone’s chasing a dream and we don’t forget that at the end of the day they represent our hometown, our country. Both parties should be respected. Don’t hate on the athlete, hate on the game/the system.” That,  of course, didn't stop the death threats, but nice to know she has his back.
Aritz Aranburu and Almudena Fernández
There’s a lot to admire about the modest and super talented Basque surfer Aritz Aranburu. The former CT surfer just won an invite comp at 10-foot Canaries, then threaded some massive caves in the Volcom Pipe Pro. Additionally, his long-term girlfriend, Almudena Fernández, is also one of Spain’s top models, having done campaigns for Victoria’s Secret and Givenchy among others. The two also are heavily involved in environmental activism and humanitarian programs. What a duo!
Alana Blanchard and Jack Freestone
Yep, that old chestnut. Surfing’s most powering of power couples, are still powering. Freestone, the former world junior champion, has finally cemented his rightful place on the CT. Blanchard having taken time out to have kids even made a comeback at the Portugal CT event last year. With their child Banks they started a blog this year called Happy Waves, which further cemented their brand as one of the most high profile in surfing.
