Surfing is among six new sports added by the International Olympic Committee for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Other sports include baseball, softball, skateboarding, karate, and sport climbing.
Baseball and softball have not been played since 2008 in Beijing, but the other four sports will be on debut.
Skateboarding hero Tony Hawk was among those to champion the news of his sport’s inclusion at the Games.
“I’m already preparing for Tokyo: conducting drills, rehearsing routines, changing diets and most importantly reversing the ageing process,” Hawk said.
Surfing's inclusion may see 11-time world champion Kelly Slater prolong his competitive career.
He will be 48 in 2020.
