The Eddie On Yellow Alert For This Thursday

Yellow alert for the 31st annual Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau.

The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau has been placed on Yellow Alert for Thursday. According to the World Surf League, who have teamed up with Quik, “the final determination on the status of the event will be made early Thursday Morning at Waimea Bay.

At time of writing the biggest swell of the winter is battering the North Shore and it is anticipated that Thursday’s swell will be Hawaiian scale 20- to 25-feet, with occasional larger waves with wave faces of 40- to 50-feet, and light trade winds.

“We are looking very closely at this swell,” said Quiksilver’s event director Glen Moncata. “These systems are very hard to predict so we will set up for the event, but we will not make the final call until Thursday morning. We don’t want to disappoint anybody and we will leave it up to the Bay to call the day on Thursday.”

Big-wave surfing has nominated headlines this El Niño winter with everywhere from Jaws to Mavs delivering many memorable moments. However, The Eddie has yet to go – the closest moment coming just two weeks ago when organisers were forced to abandon the event after the anticipated swell failed to bare fruit.

Tracks expects the hype to be much more subdued this time around after the scenes from two weeks ago at Waimea at first light. However, wouldn’t it just cap off an incredible El Niño winter if the Eddie did go?
