THE WITZIG FILES – BELLS STEPS, 1977

Images from a Golden Age of Surfing.

By the mid-1970s, the destruction of the fragile environment on the amphitheatre that is the Bells landscape became really apparent. That inevitably lead to restrictions on where people and their vehicles could go, and the beginnings of regeneration of the native plants that can thrive in that tough coastal climate… provided we humans aren’t stomping all over them.

I’m a little nostalgic for the times I parked my Kombi along that first track into Bells, or above Southside, and could wake to the sight and sounds of swell sweeping onto that wonderful bit of coast. But I’m even more grateful to the people who’ve loved and cared for this unique place…

JOHN WITZIG

A Golden Age, an exhibition of John Witzig’s photographs of the 1960s and ’70s, will open at the Bondi Pavilion Gallery on 11 September and run for two weeks.
