Aussie surfers are beginning to rise to the occasion, but will face some top opposition from their American and Hawaiian foes.

SOUTHPORT SPIT, Queensland/Australia (Sunday, January 24, 2010) – Day 3 of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade-5 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior presented by Nike 6.0 saw the entrance of the top seeds into the competition as round-three was completed.

For the second straight day, contest organisers were forced to relocate the event from its primary site at Burleigh Heads to the Southport Spit (Gold Coast, Qld), with contestable 0.5m waves filtering through and providing competitors with fun beach break conditions throughout the day.

With the event edging closer to its conclusion on Australia Day, Aussie surfers are begining to rise to the occasion, however will face some top opposition from their American and Hawaiian foes.

Chris Salisbury (Newport, NSW) today advanced through to round-four of the 2010 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior with the stylish natural footer showing no signs of the leg injury which sidelined him for the majority of last year’s season.

Salisbury will be looking for a good result in this event as not only will the winner receive a cool USD$25,000, but a high placing will consolidate Salisbury’s position in top five of the ASP Australasia Junior Men’s Ratings.

Meanwhile, Salisbury’s Northern Beaches (Sydney) compatriot Davey Cathels (Narrabeen, NSW) also breezed through his third round heat scoring a combined two-wave total of 10.00 (out of a possible 20) in tricky afternoon conditions.

Cathels is looking to consolidate his position at the top of the Junior Men’s ratings and possibly walk away with the USD$25,000 winner’s cheque.

Also impressing on day-three was Chris Friend (Alex Headland, QLD). The top Queensland seed adapted perfectly to the small conditions at Southport Spit on the Northern Gold Coast and easily advanced through to round-four of competition.

The January 22-26 competition window of the 2010 Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior presented by Nike 6.0 will also see the event’s finals conclude amidst the celebrations of Australia’s national day, bolstering the already festival style atmosphere associated with Hurley surfing events.

The Hurley Burleigh Pro Junior presented by Nike 6.0 will commence January 22 and conclude on January 26, 2010.
