I
just spent a week travelling around the North Island of New Zealand, traversing a country that changes colour and shape more frequently than a kaleidoscope. Around every corner is a view that compels you to stop and take a photo and around every headland is a set up just waiting to turn on. After five days of full throttle fun alongside the king of New Zealand surfing, Maz Quinn, I’m seriously questioning why I haven’t had the foresight to come over before. Auckland is a three-hour flight from Sydney and from the airport it’s less than an hour to the black sand peaks of Piha, which break in the shadow of the imperious Lion Rock. On the narrower stretches of the North Island the other coast is only two hours or less away. If the wind goes onshore on one side, you just jump in the car and drive to the other. The inland scenery is always pleasantly distracting and the waves worth the time behind the wheel.
