Tyler Wrights Talks To ABC Radio About Her Brother’s Brain Injury

An honest and moving interview with the current world number two.

“It’s been a crazy injury. It’s been hard as a family to deal with someone who’s had a brain injury,” says Tyler Wright in an interview with ABC Grandstand. “It’s surprising, because I’ve found that not a lot people know what it involves, or how to take care of someone in a position like that. It’s an intense injury.” The current world number two has had to deal with many highs and lows in the past twelve months. However, dealing with her brother Owen’s injury at Pipeline and watching him rehabilitate over the past year is up their with the toughest of challenges the 22-year old surfer has faced. “I spent a lot of time with him in the first six months,” says Wright. “At the same time, everything in dealing with him made my career choices easier because I’ve gained perspective. With Owen, I’ve won competitively, and I’ve kind of grown up a bit. I have bigger responsibilities in my life. When it comes to surfing and making decisions in heats, it’s not a matter of health…It’s a simple, ‘Get that wave.” Here Tyler discusses her journey as a pro surfer and caring sister while she hunts down her first world title.
