Daniel “Tomo” Thomson is a dedicated, inspired freesurfer and surfboard designer. At 33 he is already being touted as a design guru with the arrival of his ultra-modern performance-planning concepts. The SKX is Stuart Kennedy’s go to all-around shortboard for the 2017 season. The SKX features a compact outline with an even volume distribution and rocker, that lean towards the lower end of the general wave spectrum. Combined with the Trademark Tomo (QISC) ‘Quad-Inside-Single-Concave’ bottom contours, the SKX has instant ‘get up and go’ and incredible responsiveness that compliments a dynamic wave attack.

First Impressions

The Tomo looks like it has a whole bunch of technology going on. There’s this crazy concave that I don’t even know how to explain. Despite that it’s a pretty normal outline though, it’s nice and light and has a little bit of nose rocker. But those channels definitely have something interesting going on there. This could be a really good air board.

Tester’s comments

The Tomo looked like a pretty standard high performance outline with a squash-tail, but then there are a whole bunch of futuristic mods on it. It’s got a single channel running up the board and in the middle of that there’s a deep, double concave. I rode it in peaky 2-3-foot beach breaks and the board felt super drivey. It’s got a lot of squirt out of turns, which could be associated with the carbon-fibre strip in the centre of the board. As a board that’s been designed in conjunction with Stu Kennedy I dare say it would have been tested at Lennox Head, which, is quite a long point break. I noticed when I was surfing it, I would get one or two turns in and all I wanted to do was link up a couple more, so I think this board would be perfect at a point break. It was still fun in beachies, but I think it would really go off in those types of waves.
