Joker- 5’8 x 19 3/8 x 2 3/8 - 28.4 Litres Ridden by Todd Rosewall
Ride this board if...
If you like surfing something a few inches shorter than your normal performance board but still want something fast and lively.
Under the hood...
The Joker is a super fun alternative to riding your normal shortboard. It has a flat deck and full rail, giving the smaller board enough volume to paddle well and keep your wave count up. The wider nose and tail keep the outline straighter through the centre of the board, which helps you to hold your momentum through turns. The Joker has a low entry rocker which is increased through the tail, this is combined with a single concave, which runs right through the bottom, but is deeper between your feet giving you plenty speed and drive. The wide round tail performs in small mushy waves but also holds your speed when the waves are fun.
The Joker by Massey is your classic summer weapon. A good four inches down from my stock shorty, this board has that ride-it-in-anything and still have fun feel to it. A fuller outline with a wide round tail and fuller but not overly boxy rails, it’s a speed demon. I rarely ride boards this small, so for me it was a complete change up and had me eager to test it out. The length was hardly noticeable and enabled me to surf even more top to bottom without the fear of catching the nose. It got up and running quickly and when presented with a steeper section it thrived. The most surprising thing about this board is that even when a bigger set rolled in, it never felt as if it would slide out or not hold in. Ideally, it’s a summer beachbreak specialist, but will still perform in head-high plus. A great addition to the quiver in the lead up to the warmer months.
