Rip Curl GromSearch International

While the World Tour surfers grovelled in Brazil, the world’s best groms went big at pumping Lakey Peak.

Pat Curren (CA) and Brisa Hennessy (HAW) have taken wins at the 10th Annual Rip Curl GromSearch International held in flawless conditions at Lakey Peak, Sumbawa.

Pat met West Oz ripper and fellow Rip Curl teamrider Jacob Willcox in an amazing final. Curren and Willcox went blow for blow until Curren took off on a solid set wave, pulled into a long, deep tube to post a 10. Willcox came back with four excellent waves himself, including a 9.47 for a heat total of 18.63, but couldn’t hold off Curren who added a 9.63 for yet another sensational tube to take the win.

“I’ve never experienced waves like that in a competition before. Perfect barrels with ripable walls and 30 minutes to get the ones you want, it’s just a dream to be here,” said an elated Curren after the biggest win in his young career.

Brisa Hennessy, found herself sharing the magic lineup with Australian talent Isabella Nichols in the girls final. The two girls traded high scoring waves as the lead changed several times until Hennessy scored an 8.3 (out of 10) on her last wave and squeaked in front.

“This is easily one of the best comps I’ve ever been to, the waves were absolutely firing and everyone was ripping. It was a super close battle in the final, with Isabella on fire all day I knew I had to go big to take it out. I’m just really stoked to get the win in what has been an amazing comp,” commented the champ.
