Sunny Garcia Assault Complaint Dropped

A cameraman has withdrawn an assault complaint against the former world champion surfer.

Channel Nine Australia reports…

A cameraman has withdrawn an assault complaint against former world champion surfer Sunny Garcia and police say no further action will be taken.

Gold Coast police began investigations after an amateur cameraman claimed he was attacked by the Hawaiian after filming him fighting with another board rider in the waves at a pro surfing event at Burleigh Heads on Saturday.

A police spokesperson told AAP the cameraman withdrew his complaint on Monday afternoon and police have closed the case.

Garcia and world title contender Jeremy Flores from France became involved in a fight with a local surfer after Garcia’s 15-year-old son was allegedly threatened while he and Flores were free-surfing near the contest area.

The amateur cameraman who recorded the fight claimed he was attacked by Sunny Garcia soon after, when he approached him on land.

The cameraman lodged an official assault complaint with police but withdrew it on Monday afternoon.

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), which has a zero tolerance policy to violence, disqualified Flores from the Burleigh Heads event, and disqualified Garcia from a competition he was due to compete in at Newcastle next month.

The ASP Rules and Disciplinary Committee convened on Monday to begin an assessment of the incident but has postponed a decision on whether to take further disciplinary action against both surfers.

Flores is due to compete in the Quicksilver Pro, the first event on this year’s championship surfing calendar, at Snapper Rocks starting on Saturday, February 26.
