“The sun was shining, the excitement was palpable, and the waves appeared promising as the sixth annual SurfAid Cup Bondi 2023 kicked off. However, as nature would have it, the wind decided to throw a curveball, presenting us with challenging conditions that put our surfers’ skills and resilience to the test.

To kick off the day competitors, pros, volunteers and the crew from Surfing NSW met early to a deceptively calm morning. With a short hiatus after the wind storm tore across Bondi Beach, the show went on and thirteen teams of legends came together to make an impact for SurfAid’s programs and surf it out for the title of Surfing Champions.

Fishbowl delivered lunch, Cali Press provided juices, and our line up of energetic pros kept everyone’s spirits high throughout the day.

The competing teams included Premium Media, GUB Squad, Tracks Magazine, Aquabumps, South Sydney High School, Recoverie Coogee, Recoverie Cronulla, Fishbowl, Beach Burrito Co, Sunburnt Mess, Paddle For Change, Grom Squad, and The Groms. Together they raised over $75,000 to bring healthcare, clean water and food security to families in remote surf communities.

Was a treat having legends such as Nathan Hedge and Ace Buchan competing in the event.

We had two fierce heats, and winners from each heat went straight to finals. Our seven teams who battled it out for the coveted title of Surfing Champions were Aquabumps, Fishbowl, The Groms, Recoverie Cronulla, Recoverie Cooge, Sunburnt Mess and Tracks.

The surfers who joined us in the pro pool included Dylan Moffat, Jarvis Earle, Nathan Hedge, Summa and Dylan Longbottom, Kobi Clements, Saxon Reber, Koda Killorn, Gerard McCallum, Zahlia and Shyla Short, and Ace Buchan. Thank you to The Blue Hotel in Bondi who provided accommodation for our out-of-town guests!

Local boy, Pete Kavanagh, found success by blowing the tail in the rip-bowl.

After the comp wrapped up, everyone headed to Salty’s for the award ceremony and to enjoy a couple of drinks provided by the crew at Bondi Brewing.

New to the block team Premium Media took home the Fundraising Champions award, with an incredible $12,915 raised. While, the Surfing Champions award was won by the talented team from Recoverie Cronulla.

Impressive performance by the champs’ in below average conditions.

Thanks to Bondi Brewing and Bondi Active for our prizewinners gifts.

A big thank you to everyone involved!”
