Caffeine with James McKean

James McKean at Shipsterns with a dose of caffeine.

Being a surfer in Tasmania can be a real grind. The water is freezing, the winters are long and the swells can either be too big or too small. James McKean knows all about it but is not afraid to jump into the brine. Caffeine, from Simon Treweek is a little offering from the deep south cut to moody sounds and neatly cinematic.

“I remember a couple of winters back after bobbing around out behind the bluff for a most of the day, near hypothermic, Iain ‘wombat’ Chalmers pulled out a thermos of hot black coffee. To say it was good would be an understatement. Autumn is historically a good time of year to be a surfer in Tassie. However, last season at Shipsterns was slow. To see the swells we have so far this year is a welcome change. I think we are all waiting and hoping for bigger things to come this year as we move towards the chill of deep winter,” says James. Pull out that thermos of black gold we say.
