Indo has always been the place to head for the young Aussie surfer keen to spread his wings. It’s cheap, it pumps, and it’s a hell of a lot warmer than the winter you’re escaping.
Eighteen-year-old Angourie ripper Chris Zaffis just did a two-month stint over there, and aside from eating mi goreng all day everyday and surfing his arse off as swell after swell peppered Bali, the kid also took his first trip to the Mentawais and ended up winning the lowly-rated but highly-pumping QS1000 Mentawai Rip Curl Pro. In the best waves seen for a WSL event all year (up until Fiji), Chris threw down a flurry of near-perfect heat scores on his way to taking out Javanese legend Dede Suryana in the final. He then followed things up with a win in the trials of the equally pumping Keramas Pro.
This edit shows off some of the best moments of his trip along with his handy skills inside the barrel.
