Donuts and Wedges with Koa Rothman

A high calorie stopover in California.

The life of a big wave surfer can be exhausting. When that’s how you earn your crust, people expect you to risk life and limb on each and every ride. But that doesn’t big wave Daves don’t like to indulge in some regular old fun waves every now and then. For many the thrill of a three foot tube still excites.

Hawaiian Koa Rothman recently spent a little time in California and took the opportunity to indulge on something a little less threatening. Scoring some fun beach break tubes and a mandatory novelty session at The Wedge, before washing it all down with a healthy serving of chocolate donuts.

“I’ll be surfing Malibu or Venice and every time I go out there and someone recognises me they’re like, ‘why are you out here? Aren’t you a big wave guy?’ And I’m like yeah, but I love surfing fun waves no matter where I am. Big or small if I’m having fun the ocean makes me happy. I love it.”
