Mason Ho: Light Speed at Val’s Reef

Total mastery of a favourite childhood wave.

It’s rare to find a surfer who isn’t at their most comfortable when surfing the wave they grew up on. The years and years put in there give a surfer an almost uncanny knowledge of the wave’s mechanics. Which Waves to go, which to let go, how the water moves, the topography below the surface, and how it impacts a wave. It’s like an old friend, familiar and safe.

Val's reef is that spot for Mason Ho. Located on the inside of Sunset, it’s a fun but heavily flawed wave. Backwash, dead sections, bone dry sections. But Mason is intimate with them all, and it may even explain his unpredictable nature on a surfboard.

Here he sets upon his childhood spot with a ‘Light Speed’ epoxy Rad Ripper from Lost and sets the place on fire.
