Surfboards: Ellis Ericson Talks Hand Shaping

Flipping the bird to the status quo one blank at a time.

RVCA team rider, Ellis Ericson loves to dabble in all things fun. Whether it be slip sliding an eclectic quiver on lonely North Coast points, playing with his band WASH (the lineup includes Creed McTaggart) or continuing the family trade of shaping boards.

“My dad passed down the tradition of hand shaping and using a planer and flipping the bird to computers so I’ve tried to carry that on and continue to hand shape and build boards the traditional way,” he says eyeing off a freshly shaped cleanskin. “I guess it goes hand in hand with my surfing and I love it. I guess it gets me up in the morning.”

Have a listen to Ellis as he opens up about his passion for shaping boards including footage from a recent Hawaiian season from RVCA’s Boardroom series. Then see some of his hand shapes here.
