The surf edit can be a deceitful thing. To the uneducated viewer, it may appear that the clip above features Mason Ho threading ridiculously perfect tubes, groomed by a pleasant offshore breeze. However, the reality is that while perfect, this wave does its business over some of the gnarliest reef on the North Shore. Oh, and it’s also littered with sea urchins that’ll enter human skin and snap off at the slightest touch.

You’ll notice Mason go down at the start of the clip, only to surface wincing in pain and holding his hand. One wipeout and he scored himself a palm-full of urchin spines, and probably the horrendous task of digging them out at home later on.

So while Mason came in with a swag full of epic tubes, he also had to pay the piper. What do you reckon, worth it?
