Watch: Mick Fanning Slaying an Early East Coast Winter Swell

A mandatory refresher course on how good MF surfs.

Since Mick Fanning retired in 2018, we’ve not had the pleasure of seeing him surf as much as we’d like. Sure, there has been vision from a few Rip Curl trips here and there, and his recent brief return to competition at the Narrabeen Classic, in which he was bundled out in the round of 32. The ordinary waves on offer were never going to get Mick motivated enough to open up and fire.

However, what does get Mick motivated to fire up are the clean lines of an early winter swell hitting the East Coast of Australia. And after watching this clip, we’ll be the first to admit we’d kind of forgotten just how amazing the bloke surfs. It’s pure rail work savagery from the three-time world champ. The kind that not many on tour could compete with, some three years after his retirement.
