Julian Wilson didn’t get the result he wanted at the Pipe Masters this year. The former winner was knocked out early by tube-riding phenom Jack Robinson, and there definitely isn’t any shame in that.
But the contest isn’t the be-all-end-all at Pipeline. It’s a wave that can become an obsession for surfers, and simply becoming the best they can possibly be at the wave can become a lifetime goal.
Here Julian Wilson grants us entry to his camp as he makes the trek from Australia to the North Shore and gets stuck into training for not only the comp but also to put in the best performance he can at the wave. He achieves this through training with Luke Egan, some critical self-evaluation, and watching Bruce Irons clips on repeat.
